Antique Timepiece (aka Steampunk/ONE OF A KIND) TAHKLI STYLE/SIZE Support Spindle No.164 - 1916 WW1 Trench Watch Winding Barrel/Gear made by Hebdomas Watch Co. of Switzerland + Circa 1860 Swiss Sterling Silver Carved Dial

WEIGHT: 1.2 oz. (36g), WHORL: 1.35” (34) diameter, SHAFT: Smaller Size .108" (2.7mm) diameter x 7.8" (19.8 cm) length in Emerald Green

Made from 22 individual pieces, the centerpiece of this spindle is a rare Winding Barrel off of a 1916 Hebdomas Watch Company of La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland), 8-Day Winding Barrel (gear/housing that holds the watch spring) with a lovely ornate design stamped into the surface. This winding barrel is off of a high end early wrist watch - referred to as a "Trench Watch," which would have likely been used by officer class military in WW1. The winding barrel was cleaned and polished to reveal the design, coated with a layer of epoxy resin - then mounted to a 1/8" thick acrylic disc, an antique clock drive wheel, and a Swiss Made Sterling Silver watch dial with machine and hand carving/etching - and this group makes up the whorl. The whorl is mounted to a powder-coat painted metallic emerald green high carbon/spring steel shaft with a heat forged hook and finished off with gold and silver plated findings.

This is an extremely well balanced spindle with a smaller diameter whorl, and light to medium weight - and it spins forever - and it will work great for spinning a wide variety of fibers.

HISTORY: The "Trench Watch" (wristlet) was a type of watch that came into use by the military during World War I, as pocket watches were not practical in combat. It was a transitional design between pocket watches and wristwatches, incorporating features of both.
Hebdomas Watch Company: The name recalls the festivities of Ebdomee, held in Sparta, Croton and Mileto, which celebrated the birth of Apollo on the seventh day of the month. HEBDOMAS is one of the greatest and oldest Swiss watch brands, which started its activities in 1888 in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland), the birth place of many famous Swiss brands. The HEBDOMAS 8 day watch was first made at the turn of the century and has continued steadily its production, with minor variation, ever since. The outstanding feature is the unusual large mainspring barrel which occupies the rear of the movement. Hebdomas received many rewards and medals for their innovative creations - in Geneva 1896, Paris 1900, Chicago 1902, Milan 1906, Bruxelles 1910, Berne 1914 - which are inscribed many of the winding barrels.
