Antique Timepiece (Tibetan Style) Support Spindle No.142
Circa 1690 Verge Fusee Pocket Watch Movement by John Malson of London, England

WEIGHT: 2.1oz. (62g), WHORL: .74” (19mm) x 1.55” (39mm) diameter, SHAFT: .136” (3.5mm) diameter (larger size) Steel Tahkli Shaft x 8.3” (21.1cm)

Made from a total of 76 individual pieces, the centerpiece of this support spindle is the stunning piece of work of late 17th century English craftsmanship – an ornate and hand carved and pierced complete Upper Plate from a Circa 1690, made in London, England by John Malson – Verge Fusee Pocket Watch Movement - along with a circa 1750 Verge Fusee pillar plate (with Egyptian Pillars attached) from a different watch. The upper plate was acquired from a source in England and was a stand alone item – less the rest of the watch movement. I fully disassembled, cleaned, circular-lathe polished to 1,000 grit to add pattern that will bounce the light off of – then reassembled and a metallic cobalt blue film was added behind the pierced and carved balance cock (center piece that covers the balance wheel) – then reassembled with all original parts, including the hand made screws. The holes that were left over from pieces removed were chamfered on the back side and multiple Capri Blue Swarovski crystal rhinestones were added to enhance the piece – it was then coated in a thick layer of epoxy resin top coat for a no snag and long life finish. The two brass plates were laminated together and a large brass antique clock wheel and 4 brass antique watch winding gears were added to the bottom side of the plates – then the pillars were matched up and drilled into a 1/8” acrylic disc that sits below and glued together to make up the whorl. The whorl is attached to a cobalt blue shaft – along with two thick gears, an antique brass clock escapement gear, and gold plated findings finish off the whorl on the bottom side.

This is a heavier weight Tibetan Style Support Spindle that has an amazingly well balanced and long spin that will work for spinning a wide variety of fibers. John Galen Signature shafts are made from high carbon (spring) steel with a heat forged hook, and it is professionally finished with a 2-part polymer/powder-coat paint. All components are permanently bonded with 2-part industrial strength epoxy resin glue.
