Antique Timepiece (Tibetan Style) Support Spindle No.135: Circa 1780 - Made in England - Hand Painted - Porcelain-Enamel Verge Fusee Watch Dial + Circa 1850 Gilt Brass Dial (bottom side)
WEIGHT: 1.7oz. (49g), WHORL: .5” (13mm) x 1.6” (41mm) diameter, SHAFT: .141” (3.6mm) diameter (larger size) Steel Tahkli Shaft x 8.3” (21.1cm) in Metallic Champagne
Made from 102 individual pieces, there are two centerpieces to this spectacular support spindle - with the first one being the lovely hand painted (polychrome) porcelain-enamel Verge Fusee Pocket Watch Dial with its English countryside scenery - made in England around 1780 and stabilized to eliminate the likelihood of further deterioration from where the dial was likely carelessly pried off of the movement in the 70's when gold skyrocketed in price and gold cases were being scrapped by the tens of thousands. This spindle was shipped from a watchmaker in London, England and is a rare find. After being preserved, the chipped areas were filled - Japanese Kintsugi style - with lacquered gold powder - then prepared and coated in a thick layer of epoxy resin top coat for a smooth/no snag and long life finish.
The dial is laminated to 3 Acrylic discs, two gold plated outer rings, and the 2nd centerpiece is laminated to the bottom side - a Circa 1850 gilt brass pocket watch dial that has been polished to remove the faded numerals and reveal the stunning etching and applications of floral elements - and this makes up the whorl for this spindle. The whorl is mounted to a larger diameter (of the two I make) steel shaft and two silver plated findings and a 110 facets clear crystal bead is mounted on the bottom side. There are 90 Emerald AB and Light Colorado Topaz Swarovski crystal rhinestones that are mounted around the perimeter of the whorl (on the larger acrylic disc) and on the bottom surface of the dial and gold plated perimeter ring. This is a medium heavy weight spindle with a medium diameter whorl and it has an amazing well balanced spin that is suitable for short and fine long staple fibers alike.
The shaft is made from high carbon (spring) steel with a forged hook that has a 2-part powder coat paint finish applied for a beautiful look and feel. All components are assembled with an industrial 2-part epoxy glue.
