This STEAMPUNK Drop Spindle design stems from the use of a rare find; a stunningly beautiful "Swiss Fake" white porcelain with green foil back enamel bubble hour markers - Circa 1900. The dial is embellished with a large brass balance wheel, polished brass escapement wheel, polished steel winding gear, and ruby cap jewel - then it is coated with a thick layer of epoxy resin. The dial is mounted to a 2" whorl and all components, including a 1.75" polished brass clock gear and gold plated bead spacer and findings are mounted to the metallic emerald green steel shaft with 2-part epoxy glue.
The WHORL is made from a laser cut acrylic disc that I've edge milled and polished to soften the edges. The shaft is made from high carbon (spring) steel with a forged hook that has a 2-part powder coat paint finish applied for a beautiful look and feel. .
This is a wonderful light and rim weighted spindle that spins great.
HISTORY: "Swiss fakes” circa 1890 to 1910: In an effort to earn a share of US watch market, Swiss watch manufacturers produced watches that superficially resembled American railroad-grade pocket watches, but were of lower quality and sold at a much lower price. Many had names that closely resembled the names or initials of US manufacturers & watch models. These name choices were quite deliberately chosen to be deceptive, and were often engraved in lettering that copied the style of the original watches. These import watch makers were the subject of Tariff Hearings Before the US House Committee on Ways and Means...1908-1909 brought by the Hamilton Watch Co. of USA as they sought to curb deceptive watch imports, and afterwards the it became law that the words "Swiss Made" was visible on the dial.
