Balanced to Perfection! This is a heavy weight Size Support Spindle with plenty of heft and rim weight for a good long spin - good for spinning a wide variety of short and long staple fibers.

Made from 39 individual pieces, this spindle is made from a worn and weathered 1925 - Size 12 - Illinois watch Company pocket watch dial that's been embellished with antique watch gears, wheels, screws, and crystals - then coated in two thick layers of epoxy resin for a no snag/long life finish. The dial is mounted to a steel coin, two larger vintage brass clock gears, and a vintage alloy button with 16 Swarovski crystal rhinestones mounted to the surface to complete the whorl. The whorl is mounted to a 1/8" raw/uncoated spring steel shaft with a heat forged hook and it is adorned (top and bottom) with crystal spacers and stainless steel findings. All components are assembled with an industrial 2-part epoxy adhesive.

HISTORY: The ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD WATCH COMPANY of Springfield, Illinois, was organized in 1869 primarily through the efforts of J. C. Adams. The first key-wound/key-set movements were produced in 1872, and the company achieved full production in 1875 when the first stem-wind watches were produced. Illinois later produced an extensive line of extremely fine and accurate Railroad-grade pocket watches like the "Sangamo Special," "Bunn Special" and "Santa Fe Special" (just to name a few). In 1879, due to financial difficulties, the company was reorganized... changed their name to the Springfield Illinois Watch Company, and by 1885 the company name was changed yet again to the Illinois Watch Company. The Illinois Watch Company was purchased by Hamilton Watch Company in 1927, but continued to produce Illinois watches under Hamilton management until 1932 (the year the last "true" Illinois watch was made). Hamilton continued producing complete Illinois watches in the Hamilton factory until 1939 and Illinois movements continued to be finished at the Hamilton factory until 1948. In the 1950s, Hamilton offered a line of Illinois and Hamilton-Illinois wrist watches with Swiss movements. These have absolutely nothing in common with the "originals" except the name.

The Illinois Watch Company produced watches under contract for several different brands, including Burlington Watch Company (Chicago, Illinois) which operated primarily as a mail-order business, and Santa Fe Watch Company (Topeka, Kansas). There is some question as to whether Burlington was actually a subsidiary of Illinois. Watches produced under the Burlington name include some very fine (including some railroad grade) watches, which are nearly identical to Illinois movements. Illinois also produced watches for the Plymouth Watch Company (Sears Roebuck) and the Washington Watch Company (Montgomery Ward).
