This STEAMPUNK Drop Spindle design stems from the use of a pocket watch dial that was made in USA by the American Watch Company in 1863. It is off of a Model-1857 (P.S. Bartlett) Pocket watch that had no hope of ever seeing service again. The white porcelain pocket watch dial that has been specially prepared to apply this gorgeous and "Blue Man in the Moon" commercial art transfer and the design incorporates a large antique balance wheel, brass drive wheels, polished winding gears, a large ruby jewel, and several Swarovski crystal rhinestones - all encapsulated in two thick layers of epoxy resin top coat. It is mounted to a 2.25" acrylic disc (whorl), which is adorned with 12 brass watch winding gears and 24 Swarovski Shimmer AC (Cobalt) crystal rhinestones. This is an wonderfully balanced mid to heavy weight drop spindle and one of the most challenging and time consuming spindles that I've made :-)
The WHORL is made from a laser cut acrylic disc that I've edge milled and polished to soften the edges. The SHAFT is made from high carbon (spring) steel with a forged hook that has a 2-part powder coat paint finish applied for a beautiful look and feel. All components are assembled with an industrial 2-part epoxy glue. There is an additional 39 Swarovski crystal rhinestones adhered to the surface of the whorl and dial. The BOTTOM SIDE of this top-whorl drop spindle has a large (1.75" dia.) vintage clock gear attached for added stability and rim weight and the shaft is adorned with a stainless steel taper spring and multi-crystal bead spacer.
